Nigeria’s U-20 side, the Flying Eagles, narrowly edged Ghana’s U-20 side, the Black Satellites, in Wednesday night’s WAFU B U-20 final at the Stade Kegue.
By virtue of making it to the final of the competition, both teams had secured a spot at the upcoming U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament before kick-off.
However, fierce rivals Ghana and Nigeria locked horns at the Stade Kegue for the ultimate bragging right to be crowned as the winner of the prestigious Zone B WAFU Championship.
It was Nigeria who drew first blood when Kparobo Arierhi scored after 34 minutes, putting the Flyimg Eagles in the ascendancy.
Kparobo got his brace a minute before the break as a smart finish saw Nigeria double their lead, as Ghana failed to cope with the intensity of their rivals.
After the break, despite their best efforts, the Black Satellites failed to find a way back into the game as Nigeria controlled the tempo of the game.
However, 15 minutes from time, Ghana’s talisman Jerry Afriyie bagged his fifth goal of the tournament to create a nervy finale.
Nigeria’s defense withheld the Satellites’ pressure as they clinched the WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship.
