Nigeria’s U-20 men’s team, the Flying Eagles, secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over bitter rivals Ghana in the WAFU B U-20 final on Wednesday night at the Stade Kegue, Togo.
The Black Satellites overcame early struggles to turn their tournament around, ultimately finishing as runners-up in the WAFU B U20 Championship and booking their spot in the 2025 U-20 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Coach Desmond Ofei commended Ghana’s U-20 players for their resilience and determination in overcoming setbacks.
“Losing nine key players who were crucial to our success at the African Games was a significant blow. But this allowed us to build a new core of young talent, and these boys have stepped up tremendously. They deserve this qualification just as much as anyone else.”
Ghana’s U-20 team may have fallen short in the WAFU B u20 Championship final, but head coach Desmond Ofei is proud of his team’s achievement.
“Qualifying for the U-20 AFCON is a huge achievement for us, especially considering the circumstances. This team faced many challenges, but their determination and commitment have been incredible. I’m proud of each and every one of them.”
After missing out on the 2023 edition, the four-time champions will be seeking for redemption in the upcoming 2025 AFCON tournament, targeting a fifth championship title.
