Ghana legend Abedi Pele visited the camp of the Black Maidens on Thursday in a bid to lift the team’s spirits ahead of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Girls U-17 tournament.
Pele, who was a member of Ghana’s last Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning squad in 1982, was all smiles as he encouraged the ladies at their training base, the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence, Prampram.
The visit of the legendary midfielder was well received by the team, which had eased their way to a resounding 5-1 win over Rootz Sistaz on Wednesday in their first preparatory game for the tournament.
The Black Maidens will square off with Epiphany on Friday before wrapping up their preparations against Sissamba Ladies on Sunday.
Pele, thrilled by the intensity and commitment on show at the training session, encouraged Ghana to go for the ultimate in the upcoming tournament.
“I am eagerly looking forward to see the Black Maidens dominant in the upcoming tournament and i hope you win it,” he said
“I am impressed with how well you are executing your coaches’ instructions on the pitch. Stay focused and be disciplined,” he added.
Host nation Ghana have been drawn in Group A alongside Burkina Faso and Benin.
The tournament is set to kick off on December 12, with the final played on December 26. All matches are expected to take place at the Ghanaman Soccer Center of Excellence, Prampram.
