A finance and economic policy analyst, Senyo Hosi, says the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government wasted a lot of money on road construction, which is not yielding any revenue for the country.
According to him, the road sector is inefficiently run.
“The last government spent a lot of money on roads than I think any government have, but if you look at the data, the productivity on the ground was negative. We moved from 57% good roads in 2016 for highways to 37% in 2023 despite spending more money that should have your percentage higher, “ he argued on February 28 on 3FM.
Mr Senyo therefore urged President Mahama’s administration to strive for efficiency in public spending.
“The state of our real debt is not a healthy thing. The fiscal space is almost nonexistent for the new government, so it needs to create by rationalizing its expenditure. Our expenditure has been unproductive from the part of policy making and actual output. So, if they look at that, they can achieve more with even less. It’s not just a matter of tightening your belt; it’s about how efficiently you make your unit spend,” he said.
Senyo Hosi, meanwhile, believes Chief Executive Officers and appointees to State Enterprises must also be vetted to assess their competency or otherwise for the roles.
“It would have been great and beautiful if the President had put in an interviewing process for our state-owned enterprises. This will enable us also to get to know their plans and visions for the sectors they are occupying,” he suggested.
