
A military officer has been shot dead in Bawku, located in the Upper East Region, by unidentified gunmen, according to security sources.
The officer, identified as a Warrant Officer Class Two, was reportedly killed on Monday morning, March 17, 2025, near a military buffer zone set up in one of the conflict hotspots within the town.
His death has heightened tensions in Bawku, where a joint security task force has been deployed to maintain peace and stability since the resurgence of violent conflict in 2021.
This latest killing brings the total number of security personnel killed in Bawku by armed assailants to three since the conflict reignited.
- On January 23, 2022, Constable Regina Angenu, a policewoman attached to the Paga Police Command, was attacked and fatally shot by unknown gunmen. She was shot in the groin while riding on a motorbike with a male colleague she had visited.
- On April 3, 2023, three officers of the Ghana Immigration Service were ambushed near Missiga while traveling in a vehicle from Bawku township. One officer, 42-year-old Philip Motey, died from severe gunshot wounds, while the other two sustained critical injuries.
Now, with the murder of the army warrant officer on March 17, 2025, the spate of targeted attacks against security personnel in Bawku has intensified, raising serious concerns about the safety of security operatives and residents alike.
Authorities have yet to confirm the identity of the attackers, and investigations are ongoing.
The security situation in Bawku remains volatile, with increased calls for urgent intervention and long-term solutions to the recurring conflict.
