Former Black Stars midfielder Michael Essien says he’s hopeful Ghana can win a trophy someday following the country’s 43-years trophy drought.
Ghana’s last trophy came in 1982, when the Black Stars danced their way to their fourth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) crown after beating Libya 7-6 on penalties.
Since then, it’s been near misses, with the team coming close on numerous occasions.
The most recent shot at a trophy was a decade ago during the 2015 AFCON, where Ghana led 2-0 against Ivory Coast on penalties but lost 9-8 in the end.
Essien, who represented Ghana from 2002 to 2014, was capped 59 times for the Black Stars.
The 2008 AFCON semi final finish, hosted on home soil, was the closest he came to winning a major laurel with the senior setup after leaving a remarkable legacy in the junior teams.
Speaking to Sporty FM about the possibility of Ghana winning a trophy in the near future, he said.
“I think so. It just has to happen. When is that going to happen? I don’t know but it sure will happen. Its been a long time since we won a trophy but we will get there, I believe.”
The Black Stars are currently preparing for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they take on Chad on Friday, March 21.
