Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has admitted his side could have been whitewashed in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final tie against Arsenal.
Real Madrid lost 3-0 to the English side on Tuesday night after they were outclassed.
Declan Rice scored two stunning free-kicks before Mikel Merino added a late goal to secure an emphatic win for Arsenal over the defending and record Champions League holders.
Although the scoreline read 3-0 at the end, the general feeling was it could have been more.
Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois kept Los Blancos in the tie and kept the result respectable.
Courtois produced tons of saves, before and after Real Madrid went behind in the game, not least his smart double save to deny Rice’s header from close range before shutting out Martinelli’s follow up.
“We’re lucky to get away with only three. We were nowhere near it. That’s the fact and Arsenal were really good. I know two of their goals were free-kicks but they could have had way more. There is a second leg and that’s what we’re holding on to,’ Bellingham said after the game.
Real Madrid, who have never beaten Arsenal before, have a mammoth task on hand as they try to overturn a 3-0 deficit in the second leg on April 16.
