Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has issued a stern warning to prospective miners who plan to do so in forest reserves and water bodies that it will be a deadly business.
Speaking at the passing-out ceremony of some 453 Blue Water Guards at Ezinlibo in the Western Region, the Minister underscored government’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s natural resources.
The Blue Water Guard Initiative is a comprehensive programme designed to combat illegal mining in water bodies.

The initiative includes a one-month training comprising both practical and theoretical exercises. The 453 were therefore given the
necessary skills to detect and report illegal mining activities within and along water bodies and also work with law enforcement agencies in intelligence gathering and enforcement actions.
At the passing-out ceremony on Monday April 14, at the Naval Forward Operation Base in Ezinlibo, Mr Armah Kofi Buah urged the newly trained Blue Water Guards to adhere strictly to the code of conduct they had signed on to, stressing that their role is crucial in protecting Ghana’s water bodies.
“You have signed a code of conduct, a binding commitment to professionalism and integrity. Any breach of this code or compromise in your duties will attract stiff sanctions. It’s crucial that you exhibit the highest level of integrity daily, as the future of our water bodies depends on your discipline and vigilance. Your task is to help clean our water bodies,” he warned.
He also issued a stern warning that engaging in mining activities within forest reserves and water bodies will attract severe consequences.
“Our goal is to support diligent miners in growing from small-scale to medium-scale operators and eventually large-scale miners. However, the key is to guide them to mine responsibly and sustainably. Mining in forest reserves and pristine water bodies will no longer be tolerated. Any attempts to do so will face severe consequences. We are committed to enforcing this stance to protect our environment,” Mr Buah added.
Deputy Minister of Defense, Ernest Brogya Genfi, urged the newly trained Water Guards to ensure their presence signals hope to all law-abiding citizens.
“To our graduating Blue Water Guards, you have been called to a high and noble task. You are not just defenders of our water bodies; you are protectors of life itself.
“Our rivers and water bodies are the lifelines of our communities, our agriculture, and most importantly, our health. Let your presence on our waters signal hope to law-abiding citizens and a firm warning to those who seek to destroy our natural heritage through illegal mining and pollution.
“As you go out to serve, do so with integrity, courage, and professionalism. Uphold the standards you have been taught, respect the communities you serve, and always remember that the eyes of the nation are upon you.” He urged them.
The event united politicians and traditional leaders, fostering collaboration and discussion on key issues.
