Ghana’s vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia received the Queen’s Baton for next year’s Commonwealth Games at the Flag Staff House on Monday.
The baton which arrived in Ghana from Sierra Leone on Saturday was accompanied by representatives of the Ghana Olympic Committee, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), the Australian High Commissioner and Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle Constituency.
Addressing a ceremony at Flag Staff House to receive the Queens Baton Relay, the Vice President expressed great hope over Ghana’s prospects at next year’s Commonwealth games stating that with the games been hosted by Australia who are also known by Ghana’s former name, “The Gold Coast”, Ghana will surely bag home more gold medals this time round.

Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude to the Queen of England for her continuous support for the games. He said Ghana was privileged to be the second country to receive the Queens Baton Relay.
Recently-elected President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Ben Nunoo Mensah also said the Baton stop in every Commonwealth country signifies peace. He was also hopeful that Ghana’s team to next year’s games will outperform all their predecessors.

Dr. Bawumia started the relay at the Flagstaff House after which it was transported through the principal streets of Accra to the Theodora Oko Hockey pitch where it was welcomed by a host of senior high schools.
The Baton is expected to travel to about 70 countries before the Start of the games in Australia next year.
The Queen’s Baton Relay is observed every four years where the torch visits every commonwealth member state ahead of the preceding Commonwealth Games. This year, it will cover about 145,000 miles en route to its final destination in Gold Coast, Australia for the opening ceremony of the commonwealth games in April 2018.
