Electrochem Ghana Limited has refuted claims circulating in a widely shared video suggesting a violent confrontation between the company’s security personnel and members of the Ada community at the Songor Lagoon concession.
The company clarified that the incident, which occurred during a routine patrol, involved illegal miners who had invaded the lagoon to engage in unauthorised mining activities.
According to Electrochem, security personnel successfully resolved the situation through a peaceful 30-minute engagement, contrary to the narrative being portrayed in the viral video. The company described the video as a false representation aimed at discrediting its efforts and achievements in restoring and managing the lagoon sustainably.
Since taking over the concession, Electrochem has invested millions of dollars into rehabilitating the degraded Songor Lagoon. The company has implemented initiatives such as the Out-Grower Scheme and Community Pans, which provide the Ada community with access to high-quality brine at no cost, empowering local fisherfolk and salt producers.
Electrochem reiterated its commitment to maintaining open communication channels with community stakeholders, including the Member of Parliament, to address concerns and ensure mutual benefits for both the community and the company.
As Ghana’s leading salt producer, Electrochem Ghana Limited aims to produce 1,000,000 metric tons of salt annually from its 41,000-acre concession, serving both local and international markets.
The company emphasised its dedication to preserving the ecological integrity of the lagoon while fostering sustainable economic opportunities for the people of Ada.
