President John Dramani Mahama has renamed the Ministry of Youth and Sports to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to reflect the new government’s direction for the sector.
The decision effectively ends the union of sports and youth sectors as one ministry. The Youth Ministry will now stand alone as the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment.
The President, through an executive instrument, has streamlined the number of ministries in his administration, reducing them from 30 to 23. He did this in exercising his powers under section 11 (3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D. Law 327).
This restructuring aims to enhance efficiency and ensure efficient use of resources. The newly-established ministries reflect a strategic approach to addressing the nation’s pressing needs while ensuring optimal resource allocation.
The next most important decision required to get the ministry running is the appointment of a substantive sports minister, an announcement. Under President Mahama’s first term which ended in 2016, Nii Lantey Vanderpuije was the man at the helm of affairs at the Sports Ministry.
Though other names have been mentioned, industry stakeholders believe that the cabal at the Ghana Football Association (GFA) requires a strongman like Mr. Lantey Vanderpuije to be able to instil discipline and curb the rot and alleged misappropriation of funds in the sector.
