Broadcast journalist Abena Soreno Yankyera has been named the winner of the Young Media Personality – Africa category at the 7th edition of the Women’s Choice Awards Africa, held last Saturday under the theme ‘Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps and Building Legacies’. Abena emerged victorious in a highly competitive category, beating nominees including Akosua Takyi, Asieduwaa Yinka Akumia, Essilfua Boris-Hermans, Portia Arthur and Itumeleng Banda.

In her remarks following the award, Abena dedicated the recognition to young Africans — particularly young women — who continue to step into their purpose despite uncertainty. She reflected on her journey into media, which began at the age of 22, noting how the years since have reshaped her understanding of leadership and impact.
“I have come to realise that representing the voice of young people is not merely a role. It is a humbling privilege and a responsibility that transcends generations. When you speak, you’re not only speaking for yourself; you are speaking for those who are still finding their courage, confidence and voice,” she said.
Abena expressed heartfelt gratitude to Director of Western Publications, Kwame Blay, for his consistent support over the years, as well as the Women’s Choice Awards Africa organisers for the nomination and recognition. She highlighted that the award carries special meaning as it marks her fifth year of work in advocacy, broadcasting and youth-centred storytelling.
“To everyone who voted, encouraged me, mentored me and believed in the work I do — thank you for carrying me through the years. I’m especially grateful to my boss, Kwame Blay, for providing the opportunity to grow and to use my voice meaningfully,” she added.
She also paid tribute to her parents for their unwavering backing. “My parents have been my backbone — their faith, guidance and encouragement continue to shape the woman I am becoming.”
The Women’s Choice Awards Africa, organised by Global Ovations, is a prestigious platform dedicated to celebrating the achievements of outstanding women across the continent. At the 2025 ceremony, several prominent figures were honoured, including Akosua Dentaa Amoateng MBE and Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, in recognition of their significant contributions to Ghana’s development and international promotion.
