The Customer Experience Manager at XDS Data Ghana, Madam Rita Moshe, has advised women to avail to skills of both experienced men and women at the workplace, in order to ensure growth and progress in their career development.
She said it is imperative for young women to avail themselves and be mentored by experienced women and men – a phenomenon which according to her, leads to organic growth, rather than creating impressions which do not conform to one’s ability.
Speaking at XDS Data’s commemoration of this year’s International Women’s Day, under the theme, ‘Give to Gain’, Madam Moshe said, young women must not only be eager to learn from experienced female mentors but from men in male dominated fields.
“It is important that ladies venture into male-dominated fields and learn skills such as electrical, carpentry, mechanical work, barbering, IT among others” she said.
Narrating how she started as a young lady, Madam Moshe explained, her journey as a teaching assistant, and through the financial sector, to IT and now in Customer Experience have acquainted her with working around male counterparts and experienced women leading to learning several skills, which have been helpful in shaping her career.
“My journey in the financial sector has been around with majority of males throughout, but it made me stood out because I was determined to succeed” she noted.
Encouraging the female staff at the seminar, Madam Moshe appealed to them to empower themselves and not to give up in male dominated areas.
“Venture into unfamiliar fields. Don’t work under pressure to prove a point but rather, let your work speak louder than impressions” she advised.
Speaking on the need for skills acquisition, she asked the female staff not to be comfortable at their current position, but rather make constant investment in education.
She explained that most often, women feel that because they are at the top, education is no longer important. She however said, it is always important for women to further and invest in education instead of in fashion and beauty products and dresses.
“Don’t feel intimidated, ask questions, let people know you are in the room, and even if it’s a male dominated area. Don’t be jealous and treat your colleagues as competition. Mingle and don’t be a loner. Interact and learn from experienced people” she added.
She noted that humility breaks the ego of men and makes them open to teach, appealing to young women to adopt humility in dealing with people they aspire to be.
“Be humble to learn from the other gender. Humility open doors” she noted.
Enyonam Aborchie of Data Systems & Operations, speaking on Balancing Work, Marriage & Personal Life,Shared her personal journey of balancing work, marriage and her private life.Enyonam Quoted: “When a woman starts a business, she doesn’t just generate income but opportunity.”
She Encouraged consistency in entrepreneurship, using her brand MJ Kids Wear as an example that it is consistency and prayers that has helped her till now .
Manager, Legal, Governance, Compliance & Risk at XDS Data Ghana, Idrys Nana Ama Mbiah, speaking on the need for the ladies to learn about investment their income at the seminar, said it is important for women to invest as much as they save.
“Women are good at saving money, but what is more important is investment which is more important for the long term which takes much longer time to reap” she said.
She asked the young women to focus more on long term investments which makes good use of their savings.
Madam Mbiah also delivered legal lessons on marriage in Ghana and how the various types of marriages can be registered.
A staff of XDS Data Ghana, Mercy Manukure, said the event was insightful and impactful. She said her personal take home message was to invest more in educating, and rising through complex situations to achieve more.
This year’s International Women’s Day, which is themed, “Give to Gain” focuses on generosity, collaboration and support that helps women and workplaces grow.
It highlights how giving time, opportunities, knowledge and encouragement creates gains for everyone and the entire organizations.
The IWD at XDS Data Ghana, placed the spotlight on women who have given their commitment, creativity and resilience and in return gained growth, confidence and meaningful impact.
