The GBV project in collaboration with InkUp and WRN has called on Ghanaian youth to desist from attitudes that encourage violence against women at a program in University of Ghana, Legon.
The program was aimed at using creative art to educate and raise awareness about gender-based violence in the Ghanaian society.
Speaking to Citi News, the organizer, Abena Awuku-Larbi explained that there is a need to create safe spaces for the youth to share experiences and ideas on gender-based violence which hinders women from enjoying their rights.
She further explained that the normalization of gender-based violence serves as barrier to self-development which leads to low self-esteem and loss of self-dignity.
In a panel discussion on gender-based violence, panelists and participants analyzed the objectification of women in Ghana. Some participants shared stories of abuse and actions which create unsafe space for development.
A participant, sharing her story, explained that compliments and derogatory remarks about her body make her and other women feel insecure hence advised male counterparts to desist from such attitudes.
In response, a male participant argued that some compliments made by men do not intend to objectify women however women should speak up when they are offended by these remarks.
Organizers advised Ghanaian youth to be cautious in using words and expressions which objectify women.
