The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) has organized a self-care program for students, dubbed, the GIMPA self-care day.
This program was a partnership between the school’s counselling centre and the GIMPA Clinic.
Speaking to Citi News, the Dean of students, Professor Anthony Sallar highlighted the importance of training healthy and productive students through effective emotional and physical well-being.
He stated that the program was to inform students about the existence of the counselling centre in the school which seeks to improve students’ emotional and physical well-being.
Prof Stellar stressed on how meaningless an individual is with a first-class degree without being healthy hence the need to attach significance to wellness activities.
“We want to develop a student who is just not only academically good but then should also not be a social disaster in relationship with people. Health is very important. It doesn’t make sense if you get a first-class and you are not healthy. What are you going to do?”
This year’s program included physical wellness activities like body mass indices, blood pressure and sugar readings.
It also included emotional wellness activities such as deep muscle relaxation techniques, biofeedback sessions, painting, watching of blockbuster movies and armchair massages.
According to Professor Sallar, this was to prevent future disasters since the modern-day student is faced with countless challenges and doesn’t know where to seek assistance.
“The modern-day students have a lot of challenges. We live in a global environment where there would be learning of other things but they don’t have enough to sustain learning be it financial so what we want to do is that they should know that in times of crises, there is a person they can talk to.”
With several cases of attempted suicide in the country, the dean said it was necessary for such training and orientation for students so as not to increase the problem in the future.
The president of the Student Representative Council of the institution, Benjamin Ansah expressed gratitude to the school authorities for organizing the event. He was glad that students patronized the program compared to previous years, adding, “the turnout was encouraging”.
