The Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has disclosed that 1,393 people have benefited from the National Rent Assistance Scheme as of December 31, 2023.
The system was launched by the Vice President of Ghana and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in January 2023.
The scheme is designed to provide financial assistance to individuals who cannot afford to pay upfront rent, with repayments made in installments.
Asenso-Boakye, speaking on Starr FM on February 1, 2024, clarified that these beneficiaries are Ghanaians and not based on political affiliation.
He also revealed that the President allocated $80 million for the project since its inception, with an additional $10 million budgeted for the first quarter of 2024.
He said, “Interestingly, it was started exactly a year ago, and Wednesday was exactly one year. So far, 1,393 Ghanaians have benefited as of December 31st, 2023.”
He added, “Government committed eighty million dollars to the fund. This year, in the first quarter, the government has committed an additional ten million dollars.”
