Most senior civil and public servants live in hell anytime there is a change in government, the current democratic dispensation being a typical example.
Things really came to a head after the swearing-in of the new administration on January 7, 2025, led by President John Mahama. Some hoodlums believed to be members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) took the law into their own hands, chasing out perceived appointees of the Akufo-Addo regime.
This situation was exacerbated by the formation of Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), with the tacit approval of President Mahama, even before his inauguration.
The ORAL, led by Okudzeto Ablakwa, made many proclamations, although it did not have any legal backing, perhaps they saw the futility of their exercise, with the Attorney General, Dominic Ayine, saying during his vetting that the Attorney General’s Department will take over the work of ORAL. Ghanaians are waiting for him.
The NDC hoodlums have not been able to take the Judiciary and other independent institutions like they have done to our public service.
John Mahama’s agenda to reset the country is like a coup d’état where there must be a purge in the public service. Is it not amazing that even during the vetting of the President’s ministerial nominees, some stormed Parliament in a warlike fashion, reminding Ghanaians that they have taken over the affairs of the state?
The NDC led by John Mahama are not humbled by their overwhelming endorsement by the electorate in order to work extra hard and more than 24 hours a day to meet the high expectations of the people.
Rather, John Mahama and his team are engaged in musical chairs or call it cantata in their conduct of public affairs, reshuffling some appointees before they assume office, the latest being Brigadier General Ashong Annan from Chief of Staff, Ghana Armed Forces to head of the Customs Division.
Does this confirm speculations that there is an external hand beyond the Presidency calling the shots? Ghanaians should not be surprised at the developments to the extent that the Council of State is now an extension of the NDC under the direction of Asiedu Nketia. Also, the manner in which heads of the security services were removed leaves much to be desired. Furthermore, it does not make sense that the current Chief of the Defence Staff and other service commanders are all Brigadier Generals, juniors to some other senior officers. They have just been promoted to ranks commensurate with their appointments a while ago. Morale, we are told, is low among the soldiers.
As for the 24-hour economy mantra, we are still waiting for it to graduate from the concept stage to implementation when ‘dumsor’ is tackled head-on.
The Richard Jakpa-led operations unit of the National Security apparatus will soon pounce on the next target on their lineup, and we are told they are many.
The days ahead shall be really interesting as vindictiveness remains an important cornerstone of the reset agenda.
