Kumasi, Aug 18, GNA – A former assembly member for Bomso in Kumasi, Mr. William Kwame Fordjour, has called for the metropolitan assembly to act decisively to tackle the worsening noise pollution in the city.
He indicated that the excessive noise-making was a huge bother and a health hazard that must not be allowed to continue.
He said he found the seeming inaction and impotence of the assembly to enforce its bye-laws deeply worrying.
Mr. Fordjour made the call through the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and said “the law must bite to get everybody to do the right things”.
He complained about the situation, where churches, night clubs operators and vendors of music on cassette and compact disk (CD) player, showed no or scant regard for the accepted noise level.
The city authorities, he added, needed to move quickly to force the noise-makers to respect the rights and to have consideration for the interests and concerns of their neighbors.
The assembly’s bye-law provides that “No proprietor of night club, restaurant, drinking bar or other place of entertainment, shall play any music so loudly as to cause disturbance or nuisance to residents in the area”.
It also states that, “No person conducting a religious service shall play any music or allow any music to be played at the service, so loudly as to cause disturbances”.
Mr. Fordjour said this had largely been ignored and it was time everything was done to make sure that there was compliance.
