Tamale, Dec. 11, GNA – The Human Rights Advocacy Centre (HRAC) has organized a durbar in Tamale to commemorate the international human rights day as part of its mission to protect human rights in the country.
The celebration was dubbed: “Shine your light for human rights; Differences does not mean less human”.
As part of the celebration, there was free HIV/AIDS screening and a drama staged to demonstrate the need to protect human rights.
The international human rights day takes place on the 10th of December annually and it is held in remembrance of the declaration of the Universal Human Rights by the United Nations.
Mr Nuhu Musah, the Northern Regional Technical Coordinator for the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC), said the human rights of persons living with HIV/AIDS, have been solidified by ACT 983 of the GAC, and this means that their rights cannot be infringed upon.
He urged the public to get tested and know their HIV/AIDS status in order to protect themselves against infection or treat the virus at an early stage.
DSP Emmanuel Holortu, a representative of the Ghana Police Service (GPS), said the state made provisions for the protection of human rights but there is the need for individuals to demand and insist on their rights in order to make these provisions effective.
He said the GPS and the state are ready to ensure the projection of human rights and individual as well has the responsibility to report any act of infringement.
Mr Salifu Saaed, the Northern Regional Minister, in a speech read on his behalf, said there is the need for society to create an enabling environment for the vulnerable in order for them to enjoy their human rights.
