Accra, March 18, GNA - Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President of Ghana, has launched the 2019 edition of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Ghana's Fastest Human (GFH), aimed at grooming talents for international competitions.
The annual championship would be held across the country, where the regions would be grouped into zones.
Tamale would host the first meet on April 27, with the grand finale scheduled for Kumasi, on September 14.
The final four would be selected into the GNPC Speedsters Club and placed on a one-year residential camping.
He commended the headline sponsor GNPC and others of the annual national sprint championship for supporting a laudable initiative.
Dr. Bawumia said, Ghana's presence must be felt at international competitions adding that, participating to win medals must be our prime focus and not just partaking.
According to him, Ghana needs to prepare adequately to present a formidable team that can bring glory to the nation when Ghana hosts the 2023 Africa Games.
"We believe in the Olympic philosophy that not winning but taking part. The believe keeps Ghana honouring invitation to participate in international games, however the modern day aim to participate in International games was to be used as a tool to promote the good image of Ghana like many other countries do,” he said.
Dr. Kofi K Sarpong, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GNPC said, his outfit was motivated by the principal objective of the project, which was to unearth talents and nurture them to represent Ghana at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
"Since we started partnering the Ghana Fastest Human, we have seen the progress made by athletes who participated in these championships.
"As the national oil company of Ghana, we are committed to positively impacting the lives of, especially, the youth by empowering their dreams. We see our investments as a national duty. We are happy to have contributed to Ghana's Fastest Human athletes making impressive times and peaking as the 2020 Olympics draws closer, " he noted.
Mr. Reks Brobby, the CEO of GFH project expressed appreciation to government for honouring his invitation.
He mentioned that, he was encouraged by the results and successes chalked adding that, he's committed to work towards achieving the aim of the project.
