Wa, Dec. 16, GNA - Mr Ali Osman, the Upper West Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), has said the Commission was ready to conduct the District Assembly and the Unit Committee elections slated for December 17, 2019.
He said the Region received all electoral materials, which had already been dispatched to all the eleven districts for the exercise to take-off on Tuesday, December 17.
Mr Osman told the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Monday that 19 women were among the 968 persons who had filed their nominations with the Commission to contest the upcoming District Level Elections in the Upper West Region.
He said only one female had filed to contest in the Wa Municipality, two in Wa West Constituency, two in Nadowli/Kaleo Constituency; one in Daffiama/Bussie/Issa, Jirapa, four, Lambussie, two, Lawra, four, Nandom, one and Sisala East, two.
No woman had filed nomination to contest in the Sissala West and Wa East constituencies.
Mr Osman announced that 75 women out of a total of 1,994 people had also filed to contest in the Unit Committee elections in the Region.
He said only three Persons with Disability (PWDs) had filed to contest for the assembly member position while two PWDs had filed to contest the Unit Committee positions.
In all, there were 293 electoral areas in the Region, out of which 267 were being contested. 207 Unit Committees are also being contested.
Mr Osman explained that in some of the areas some of the assembly members were unopposed and as such elections would not be conducted in those areas.
