Dumasua, (B/R), Dec. 18, GNA – Mr Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the Member of Parliament for Sunyani West constituency, has presented working tools and accessories worth GH¢320,000.00 to 800 artisans in the constituency.
They included; 400 hairdressers and 400 seamstresses and tailors, with each one of them receiving dryers and accessories, and electronic and manual sewing machines.
The artisans were selected from Nsoatre, Dumasua, Kwatire, Fiapre, Odomase, Chiraa, Ayakomaso and Adantia in the Sunyani West Municipality.
Presenting the items, Mr Baffour-Awuah, who is also the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, said he was also procuring 3,000 cutlasses for distribution to farmers registered under the Planting for Food and Jobs programme.
The MP said employable skills training remained the surest remedy to the country’s youth unemployment, and therefore implored the beneficiaries to engage and train some more unemployed youth.
Mr Baffour-Awuah refuted the assertion that skilled trade like hairdressing, dressmaking, plumbing and carpentry were reserved for the academically poor in society.
He said the Government led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo placed priority on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and was therefore determined to invest in it and make it more attractive.
The MP said the unemployed youth who availed themselves for employable skills training either formal or informal could easily fetch themselves jobs in the long term and called on parents to motivate their children to go into TVET education and skill training.
He expressed the hope that the tools would enhance livelihoods of the beneficiaries and advised them to handle the apparatuses with care.
Mr Obeng Mensah, the local Chairman of the Dumasua branch of Tailors and Dressmakers Association was thankful for the support and appealed for more of the machines for others.
