Wa (UW), Dec 22, GNA - The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has inaugurated an Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDCs) for conflict resolution ahead of the 2020 general election in the Upper West Region (UWR).
This was at a programme organised in Wa by the NCCE to train the committee made up of representatives from all the political parties, Electoral Commission, the National Peace Council, Religious groups, women groups, the security services and other stakeholders to ensure there was peaceful election before, during and after the 2020 general elections.
Madam Patience Sally Kumah, the Upper West Regional Director of the NCCE described the IPDCs as a unifying body, which will promote peace and resolve conflicts before, during and after the 2020 general elections.
She said Ghana had conducted successful presidential and parliamentary elections seven times and peacefully transferred power from a ruling party to an opposition in 2000, 2008 and 2016.
Madam Kumah the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) supported the NCCE for the establishment of the committee ahead of the 2020 election to curb possible conflicts and promote peace nationwide.
She said the IPDC was expected to work with the National Peace Council and all relevant stakeholders in peace building towards a successful Presidential and Parliamentary election in 2020.
"The IPDC will provide an effective platform for key stakeholders to engage with political parties” she explained.
A three member executive was nominated to lead the committee for the next four years and they include; Mr Abdul Rahaman Haruna as the Chairman, Mr John Yibile, Secretary who also doubles as the deputy Upper West Regional Director of the NCCE and Mrs Gladys Diedong as the organizer.
Mr Yibile said the IPDCs would also deepen collaboration between the NCCE, EC, Political Parties, the Youth, Security Agencies and all other relevant stakeholders in the promotion of non-violence election.
He said the committee shall monitor the behaviour of the electorate and supporters of political parties as they are often used by the parties to commit electoral offences.
