My statement about betting tax was misleading â?? Finance Minister Amin Adam
Former Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has urged Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to clarify his plan to abolish the betting tax.Dr. Adam made this call on Thursday, March 13, while responding to the 2025 National Budget presented by Dr. Forson in Parliament on Tuesday, March 11.In his budget statement, Dr. Forson announced that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government would abolish the 10% withholding tax on betting winnings, which was introduced under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. However, Dr. Adam argued that the former government never collected the betting tax despite implementing it. He insisted that Dr. Forson must provide a clear explanation regarding the abolition.Dr. Adam also responded to Dr. Forsons remarks on ChannelOne TV, where he claimed the tax was collected. He maintained that the confusion surrounding the tax comes from the current Finance Minister, not him.If you want to abolish the betting tax, you have to be very clear about that because you cannot use the betting tax to generalize tax on other games of chance. This was my confusion as well, and so whilst I concede that my statement was misleading (on Tuesday), without the clarifications I have provided today, the confusion about the betting tax or lottery winnings tax is not mine. It is the Ministers confusion, and the Minister must come out and clarify that.
