English-Ghanaian defender Kelvin Abrefa showed his quality with a late assist, but it wasn’t enough as Reading suffered a 2-1 home defeat to AFC Wimbledon in League One on Saturday afternoon.
In front of home fans at the Select Car Leasing Stadium, the Royals struggled to make their dominance count despite controlling 61% of possession. AFC Wimbledon struck first in the 32nd minute when Matty Stevens rose high to head in Nathan Asiimwe’s cross. Reading pushed for a response but couldn’t find a way through before the break.
The visitors doubled their lead in the 70th minute, Marcus Browne finishing neatly from close range after Myles Hippolyte’s clever set-piece delivery. Reading’s fans were given hope late on when Abrefa picked out Lewis Wing, who unleashed a stunning strike from outside the box in the 86th minute to cut the deficit.
Despite their late surge, Reading couldn’t find an equaliser. The Royals will now look to bounce back when they face Bolton Wanderers in their next League One clash.
