Ghana head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren says there is still significant room for growth within the Black Queens squad as he continues to build a competitive team capable of challenging the top nations.
Speaking after their 2-0 friendly defeat to England at St Mary’s Stadium, Bjorkegren acknowledged the challenges that come with improving the squad, given that only Ghanaian players are eligible to represent the national team.
“We need to remember that we are working for Ghana, it means that we can’t sign new players,” he said. “We need to have a Ghanaian player in the team. So, it’s not so easy but I do think that we have a huge potential.”
Despite the loss, the Swedish coach pointed to encouraging signs, including the debut of French-born defender Benedicte Simon. The attacker, who recently committed her international future to Ghana, impressed.
The Black Queens will return home encouraged by their spirited display against the European champions, with Bjorkegren determined to push the team further as preparations continue for next year's Women's Africa Cup of Nations.
