Mohammed Kudus and Anthony Elanga arrived in the Premier League’s summer market as high-profile wide additions for Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, respectively. Both commanded significant fees of around £55 million, yet their contributions so far have moved in opposing directions.
Kudus has quickly cemented his importance at Spurs, while Elanga has struggled to settle at Newcastle. Tuesday’s meeting between the two clubs underlined the contrast. Kudus proved decisive in his involvement, setting up Cristian Romero’s first goal as Tottenham battled to a draw. His energy in possession, sharp dribbling and willingness to take responsibility once again stood out.
Elanga, meanwhile, made little impact from the bench. The Swedish winger, formerly of Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, has found opportunities limited and has yet to deliver the level of performance expected following his move to Tyneside.
Although several years younger than Kudus, Elanga has so far lacked the influence and confidence demonstrated by his Ghanaian counterpart. Newcastle supporters are still waiting to see the explosive play and strong finishing that convinced the club to invest in him.
Kudus’ progress at Tottenham comes despite the team’s broader struggles in attack. He has often operated without consistent support from the opposite flank or the central striker position, placing additional pressure on him to create chances and produce goals. His creative instincts and ability to weave through defenders provide Spurs with a valuable outlet during difficult moments.
The form of the two players highlights divergent trajectories early into their respective chapters. While Newcastle remain hopeful that Elanga will grow into his role, Tottenham are already seeing clear returns on their investment. With more stability and improved structure around him, Kudus’ ceiling appears significantly higher.
His performances offer Spurs optimism in a season that has otherwise lacked momentum, marking him as a key figure moving forward.
