Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has hinted that teh FA will decide on Francis Abu's chances of playing at the 2026 World Cup.
The Toulouse FC midfielder is currently recovering from a horrific ankle injury he suffered in Black Stars' friendly game against Japan last month.
Abu suffered two fractured bones after an awkward twist while attempting to block a shot," Asante Twum said in an interview with Joy Sports.
"Normally, it depends on the kind of surgery that takes place.
"We were fortunate to get one of the best surgeons to operate on him, a very young Japanese doctor.
"He promised that Abu would be back very soon after the surgery.”
After the injury, the French Ligue 1 side announced that Abu would likely miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup; however, his early return to training has offered some optimism in his recovery and race to be fit for the global showpiece.
"We have to wait for Abu to recover. We pray that he recovers on time and starts field work,” Asante Twum said.
"He begins to get some playing time, and once that happens, we will make a decision."
Ghana coach Otto Addo has until June 1, 2026, to announce his final squad for the World Cup.
