South Africa coach Hugo Broos conceded that "it was not our day" after his side's painful 2-1 defeat to Cameroon, which sent Bafana Bafana crashing out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations at the Round of 16 stage.
The Belgian manager pointed directly to a series of squandered opportunities as the cause for the early exit, a significant regression after finishing third in the 2023 edition of the tournament.
"We started very well in the game, and we had chances to score. I think if we had scored, we could never lose the game," Broos stated. He lamented the inability to capitalise on a strong first-half performance against a Cameroonian side that had been in turmoil, with coach David Pagou taking charge only weeks before the tournament.
Despite the dominance in key moments, the decisive goals eluded them. "Even we had the chances to score two goals and to have a draw, but it was not our day," Broos admitted in a post-match interview.
With their AFCON campaign now over, South Africa's attention will immediately shift to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification, as they look to channel the frustration from this continental setback into their quest for a place on the global stage.
