Athletic Club winger Nico Williams has sparked excitement ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by declaring his unwavering belief that Spain possesses the quality to claim the global title.
Speaking in an interview with FourFourTwo, the 23-year-old Spain international of Ghanaian descent made no secret of his ambitions as he prepares to lead La Roja’s attack in North America this summer.
Fresh off a stellar period for both club and country, Williams identified the tournament as the ultimate goal for a generation of Spanish players that recently tasted European success.
“We have a very important challenge, and I hope to win the World Cup,” Williams told FourFourTwo. “I think we’re going to win the World Cup with the team we have.”
Despite his confidence, the winger was quick to acknowledge the caliber of the opposition standing in Spain’s way.
He noted that the path to glory would require overcoming some of the most formidable squads in international football.
“There are world-class players who are going to help us. We have big rivals like France, England and Argentina, who are very tough, but I have a lot of confidence in ourselves,” he explained.
The Athletic Club forward, who has become a focal point of Luis de la Fuente’s tactical setup, emphasized that Spain would not be blinded by arrogance despite their status as one of the favorites.
Instead, he advocated for a methodical approach to the month-long tournament. “We’re going to try to go step-by-step,” Williams added. “Winning the World Cup would be the icing on the cake.”
Williams’ comments come at a pivotal time for his career. Having managed a persistent groin injury throughout the 2025â26 La Liga campaign, his fitness has been a subject of intense scrutiny in Bilbao and Madrid alike.
However, with four goals and two assists in 19 appearances this season, he remains Spain’s most potent transitional threat.
