It brought together community members, chiefs and other opinion leaders to discuss community involvement in identifying projects that were of pressing need to the people and how they could support government through the district assembly to address these needs.
Mr. Augustine Akugri, the District Director of the Commission, said social auditing was not for fault finding but to draw the people closer to their leaders - to ensure accountability and transparency in the handling of community funds and projects.
Governments, the world over, were confronted with demands from the citizenry to account to them because the people were increasingly becoming informed.
Social auditing was guiding them to demand accountability from those leading them.
Mr Akugri added that, it was also a vital tool, government institutions had been using to plan and measure economic activities in the various communities so that there would be prudent management of finances.
That was how the communities could actually get projects that were dear to their hearts.
He commended the European Union (EU) for its continuous support to the NCCE and said the expectation that this would be sustained.
Madam Agnes Anamoo, the District Chief Executive (DEC), said the programme would help the assembly to gauge the felt needs of the people and to plan towards tackling them.
It was going to guide it to prioritize development projects to bring maximum benefits to the people.
The assembly was making frantic efforts to ensure that the district got its own hospital to save the people the trouble of travelling long distances to either Bawku or Bolgatanga to access healthcare services.
The DCE advised the people to let their choice of development projects be influenced by the interest and general good of children and future generations.
The stakeholders identified a good source of drinking water and a district hospital as their topmost needs.
A committee comprising the assembly member of the Nangodi Electoral Area, representatives of the Nangodi women’s groups, persons with disability, traditional rulers, youth groups and officials of the NCCE was formed to draw up an action plan on how to get these done. Read Full Story
