The Central Regional minister, Mr. George Kweku Rickets Hagan, has advised farmers in the region to take advantage of the current economic prospects in the region to increase their yields, so as to derive maximum profits.
He said the refurbished Ayensu Starch Factory at Awutu Bodwiase and the newly constructed Komenda Sugar Factory present golden opportunities for farmers in the region to improve their lots.
The minister stated this at Assin Foso on the occasion of the 32nd National Farmers/Fishermen Day Celebration held in the region.
Mr. Hagan disclosed that about 1,250 metric tons of sugar cane would be crushed daily at the Komenda Sugar Factory, when it starts production at full capacity.
This, he said, meant that about hundred trucks of sugar cane would have to be transported to Komenda daily.
He, therefore, implored the farmers to develop interest in the cultivation of sugar cane plantation because there would be ready market for any quantity that they would produce
.
In the light of this, he added that, government has put in place a support scheme to assist farmers who would want to venture into sugar cane cultivation to help increase the production of sugar cane in the region.
Touching on the Cassava Factory, he said, “In 2015, a total of 185.3 hectares of land in 12 Districts and Municipalities were distributed to 18,500 farmers.
“All these were aimed at increasing production of improved cassava, boosting the processing of cassava into Gari and the supply of cassava to the refurbished Ayensu Starch Factory for the production of “Root Bear” by Guinness Ghana’.
He noted that though there were numerous investment areas and several windows of opportunities in the Agric sector, these opportunities have not been fully exploited.
As a result, he said, government through the ministry of food and agriculture had put in place prudent policies, programmes, projects and initiatives that would curtail the constraints and make investment in the sector less risky and more rewarding.
The municipal chief executive of Assin Assembly, Dr. Kofi Blankson noted in his address that agriculture holds the key to reducing rural poverty and improving livelihoods.
He hinted that the Municipal Assembly was constructing a veterinary clinic in the municipality to boost livestock production in the municipality and the region at large.
Mr. John Coffie, a middle aged man from Upper Denkyira East District was adjudged the overall regional best farmer for this year.
He appealed to the youth not to see farming as a punishment or a reserve for the elderly, but take advantage of the several opportunities that overflow in the sector to create employment for themselves.
Agriculture currently employs about 44.7 per cent of the total workforce in both formal and informal sectors of the Ghanaian economy.
Since its inception in 1985, the National Farmers’ Day is commemorated each year on the first Friday of December.
It is a day set aside to honour farmers and fishermen for their invaluable roles and contributions to the attainment of food security and sufficiency in the country.
This year, the day was celebrated under the theme: ‘Agriculture: A Business Response to Economic Growth’.
