The Ghanaian creative arts industry has lost one of it prolific writers whose music has unveiled the kind of character he was. John Gershon Koomson, popularly known as JG Koomson, passed on onto glory on January 12, this year at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
JG has contributed immensely to the upliftment of choral music in Ghana, with a number of choral compositions to his credit, including hymnal arrangement and anthems.
One of his hymnal arrangements was Tune Elizabeth Ansah, an original creative work by the late D.F Nzeh and arranged by JG Koomson.
This arrangement work by JG was released in 2017 by George Mensah Essilfie in memory of the late JG.
Considering the contribution of JG to choral music, the Salt and Light Music (SALM) Resident Choir, The Harmonious Chorale, held an evening with the late JG, where some of his creative works was performed by the singing group.
The popular ‘Aseda’ anthem, composed by JG, was also rendered at the occasion.
Some of the works of JG include, Medzi Nyim Daa, Holy is the Lord, I Need Thee, Mame Gyedzi Ntaban amongst many others.
The contribution of JG to Ghanaian choral music has led to many exceptional Ghanaian choral writers coming out to pay tribute to him.
Describing the passing on of JG Koomson as sad news because he was still in his prime, composer Ken Kafui described JG as a quite composer. “It is his music that spoke for him. He wrote very good choral and instrumental works.”
He continued: “JG’s music was very inspirational and also revealed his inner self.”
This Ken Kafui explained to mean that “when you listen to a composer’s song, you get to see what is in him. Because he was very quiet, it is through his music that you get to know who Koomson was.”
Other composers such as Kras Arthur, Newlove Kojo Annan, Yaw Sekyi Baidoe and George Mensah Essilfie have all come out to eulogise the passing choral giant for his contribution to Ghanaian arts music.
