The Founder of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, has hit hard on the waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, that it had failed in clearing filth in the country.
According to her, the company is not capable of handling waste, citing that, Accra for instance, is dirty and one would have to struggle to find a better place to put one’s foot, though there is an agency which is supposed to clean the city.
“If he (Zoomlion) knew how to do it (clear filth), Mr President, we wouldn’t have this problem. If you go to Accra today, you don’t know where to put your foot,” she charged.
The former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, was addressing President Akufo-Addo at a meeting he held with leaders of political parties at Jubilee House to find ways to combat the Coronavirus.
In her address, the wife of former President Jerry John Rawlings stated that almost all companies that are to clean the cities in the country belong to one man, but has proven not worth its salt.
She stressed that if the Coronavirus does not kill Ghanaians, bacteria will, due the degree of filth across the country.
She said: “If COVID-19 doesn’t kill us as a virus, bacteria will kill us in the country. The filth, the mess – and Mr President, having checked on a number of things, I have realised that almost all the companies that are supposed to clean our cities belong to one man, Zoomlion, but in different names. If he (Zoomlion) knew how to do it, Mr President, we wouldn’t have this problem. If you go to Accra today, you don’t know where to put your foot.
Responding to the issue of filth, President Akufo-Addo announced that the government had rolled out a programme to clean the cities.
He said that the government is using the lockdown period to ensure that the two cities, Accra and Kumasi, are cleared of filth.
“Fortunately, we’ve began a programme now to clean the country. Government is using the lockdown in Accra and Kumasi to begin a major programme of sanitation. It is a worrying matter for us.
“We’ve not had in place institutions that could maintain a constant high level of sanitation in our country. The time has come for us, and I think that the lockdown gives us the opportunity to clean the country,” the President asserted.
