The Ghana Bar Association (GAB) has presented an amount of GH¢106, 000 and two laptop computers to the Legal Aid Commission. The laptops are to be given to the Bolgatanga office of Legal Aid to help with their day-to-day activities.
The Bar President, Anthony Forson Junior, presented the donation to the Executive Director of Legal Aid Commission yesterday in Accra.
Mr Forson indicated that the responsibility of assisting the Legal Aid Ghana, started in 2010 and 2011, when the then Chief Justice Georgina Wood made the request for the Bar to support the Legal Aid Ghana financially.
In fulfilment of the request, it was decided at the time that certain percentage of the solicitors’ license fee be given to Legal Aid to support their operations.
With the exponentially growth in the number of lawyers in the country since 2011, the General Legal Council decided that five per cent of the gross collection of the solicitors’ licence must be given to the legal Aid.
According to the Bar President, for some reasons his outfit could not honour their obligation in 2018, but was happy that they have done so in 2020.
He also said the laptops are his personal donation to the Commission for the Bolga office, which was made possible with the support of two other individuals.
The reason being that, this year’s Bar Annual Confidence was scheduled to be held in Bolga, but because of the Covid-19 global pandemic, it was organised in Accra and members joined via Webinar.
Martin Amoyaw, the Executive Director of Legal Aid Commission, thanked the Bar for the support and added that the donation will go a long way their operations.
He was very much appreciative of the support because the Commission is one of the under resourced institutions in the country, which can only boast of two over aged vehicles and lack of office spaces across the regions.
Ideally, the Legal Aid is supposed to have offices in all the districts across the country, but could only point to its presence in 35 districts because the Commission is underfunded and cannot afford to rent office space.
