Health personnel at the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA) Hospital have zipped up their lips on their negligence which later resulted in the death of a pregnant woman Tuesday evening.
The deceased, according to snippets of information The Chronicle gathered, was left to her fate when her family conveyed her to the hospital where a couple of suspected nurses were at post, but not in uniform as a result of their industrial strike action. There was no doctor at the time.
Reeling in pain and screaming for help, the pregnant woman and family were said to have pleaded with the few suspected nurses, who were sitting idle to assist, but were ignored.
The family of the expectant mother reportedly rushed the teeth gnashing and groaning woman to the Police Hospital, where she was later reported dead the same night.
When The Chronicle visited the LEKMA Hospital on Wednesday, a few nurses who agreed to grant audience to the paper said, indeed, they heard the tragedy on Wednesday morning when they reported for duty, however, they could not give any further information.
“It’s very unfortunate that, that happened, but all we can tell you is that our leadership said we should call off our strike action and resume work tomorrow (Thursday). We cannot say anything more,” the nurses told The Chronicle on condition of anonymity.
They furnished The Chronicle with the contact of the Municipal Health Director, Jacqueline Sfarijlani, but her number could not be reached.
In a telephone interview with the Deputy Commissioner of Police and Director at the Police Hospital, David Eklu, he told The Chronicle that the hospital could not confirm or deny the information due to medical ethics.
“I cannot confirm or deny the information you have because we need to keep all patients’ confidential information. If the family of the patient had spoken to you to confirm or deny it, the hospital would have also confirmed or denied what they would have told you,” Mr David Eklu said on the telephone when The Chronicle called him.
Still on the nurses strike action, The Chronicle spotted a few nurses dressed in mufti at the Tema General Hospital and Ashaiman Polyclinic attending to some patients at the Out Patient Department (OPD).
A Senior Nurse, dressed in mufti at the Tema General Hospital, said their action was unfortunate, but lashed the government for unfairly treating nurses. “We are committed to giving our best to the patients, but if our side of the bargain would not be fulfilled by our employer, we can only take the action we have embarked on to press home our reasonable demand,” the Senior Nurse shared.
Speaking to The Chronicle on condition of anonymity, the Senior Nurse said she was yet to receive a formal direction from their leadership to call off their strike action and resume full duty on Thursday.
