Nii Bortey Klan I, Chief of Klagon, a town along the Nungua-Ashaiman highway, has commenced the construction of a multi-million-cedi palace to bring dignity and respect to his kingdom.
The palace, which comes with a one-storey three-bedroom Chief’s residence, two semi-detached guests apartments, one storey office complex with two separate washrooms, a 300-seater capacity conference hall, a flower garden, large parking space, security post, a dual-purpose swimming pool with changing rooms, a summer-hut and beautifully erected fence wall adorned with traditional statues, was built on three acres of land.
The project, which was started two years ago, is expected to be completed by the end of next year, 2021.
When completed, the multi-faceted palace will be the first of its kind in the entire southern part of the country, as it is well equipped and resourced within a serene environment.
The Chief, who is well noted for his penchant for development, is on record to have undertaken a number of development projects in his community.
Some of the projects he has undertaken include a police station, made up of a charge office, two cells each for males and females, an armoury, Commander’s office, and a Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) office of the Ghana Police Service.
Also, a bungalow for the Police Commander is currently under construction.
Others include a Ghana Heath Service Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound, 12-seater public toilet, and a fire service station, also under construction, among others.
Speaking in an interview with The Chronicle yesterday, Nii Bortey Klan I said he was motivated to undertake the development of the palace because, as a Chief, one needs a befitting place to call home.
According to him, since becoming the Chief of the community over 12 years ago, he had traveled far and wide, and had seen for himself traditional edifices of other traditional rulers and thought it wise he needed one to demonstrate his kingship.
Explaining that the palace is about 70 percent complete, Nii Klan said he is motivated by the comments from people who have been visiting the site.
“As a Chief, I have traveled far and wide and have seen what other chiefs have done in terms of the palaces they live in and the respect it had brought them.
“So I decided to construct this for myself and my people. When I started, the kind of comments I have been getting from people who visit me here is overwhelming. This is what inspires me to do what I am doing,” he noted.
Continuing, Nii Bortey Klan said the responsibilities of chiefs are numerous, ranging from ensuring the welfare of their subjects, especially the health needs and education of the youth, to the security of the people.
He appealed to chiefs in the Greater Accra Region, and other parts of the country, not only to look at their personal interests alone, but most importantly, look at the welfare of their subjects so as to bring peace and prosperity to their respective communities.
