James Nana Wamber, suspect in Prof Benneh’s murder
James Nana Wamber, 29 year old prime suspect in the murder of Prof. Emmanuel Yaw Benneh, Legon Law lecturer, has changed his earlier confession that he made to the police.
At a press briefing last Friday at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters, the Director–General of CID, COP Issac Ken Yeboah, indicated to the media that he committed the crime with one other person.
“James initially mentioned the names of some suspects but has changed it. He said he admitted that he did commit the crime with one other person.”
Earlier, the suspect had told the Kaneshie District Court that he committed the gruesome murder with three others and two were on the run. The other accused person, Opambour Agya Badu Nkansah, as of Wednesday September 30th, was facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder.
This confession led to the discharge of Christian Pobee, Isaac Botchwey and Adams Mensah Mansur, who were all workers of the late Professor and were first implicated.
However, James, who initially mentioned the names of some suspects, said he rather committed the crime with one other person. He said he had a duplicate key and was able to get access to the room, together with the new accused, who is yet to be made known, COP Ken Yeboah said.
He indicated that the suspect said the idea was to rob the late Professor but he did not give in easily and so they hit him, gagged him and tied him down.
He said James confessed that he and the new accused made away with a sum of GH?450.00 which was in the Professors wallet, a Central Processing Unit (CPU) which they threw into a septic tank and two mobile phones which they sold.
Mr Ken Yeboah indicated at the press conference that the police was visiting the crime scene that very day to get some of the items.
The late Prof. Benneh was allegedly murdered in his private residence at Adjiringanor, in Accra.
He said the deceased was found dead with a piece cloth in his mouth, with his hands and legs tied with a rope.
Until his demise, Prof. Benneh was a Professor of law at the University of Ghana, Legon. The late professor was last seen alive at about 8:00pm on September 10th within his neighbourhood.
