
Urban Forestry Officer Duodu helps the mayor to plant a tree
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), in collaboration with the Central Sector Cadet, the National Youth Authority (NYA), the Metro Environmental Unit and Health Unit, has embarked on a tree planting exercise for about 187 public basic schools in the Metropolis.
Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi, Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), at the launching ceremony at the Martyrs of Uganda R/C Junior High School, explained that the exercise is aimed at achieving the SDG 15 toward clean drinking water, quality health care, and improved sanitation and related human life issues.
According to him, trees play a critical role mentally, physically and the health needs of human beings, and for that matter, the need to prioritise tree planting and also inculcate the habit into the children of school-going age to take it up to enhance the preservation of the environment for the future.
He noted that tree planting can help to eliminate pollution and promote strong economic growth for the people, and encouraged the school authorities and the students to embark on tree planting to transform the whole city of Kumasi to regain its past glory as the Garden City.
The Mayor gave the assurance to support the heads of schools, which would show commitment in the tree planting exercise, with seedlings and logistics to make the programme viable and stress free.
The Mayor also donated 500 face masks, 40 packs of water, and 400 hand sanitisers to the students.
Foster Cosby Amoh, Metro Youth Officer, (National Youth Authority), revealed that about 3,000,000 trees are lost annually because of the expansion of agriculture and charcoal activities, and urged the students, and Ghanaians as a whole, to prioritise tree planting to enhance the survival of the future.
The Youth Officer disclosed that the exercise would help re-educate the Ghanaian public on the importance of trees in our lives, and urged the youth to lead the crusade for tree planting to protect lives.
