Residents of Sokwai in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region have resorted to Open Defecation for lack of toilet facilities, Mr. Collins Nsiah Junior, Assembly Member of Pasro-Sokwai Electoral Area has disclosed.
Sokwai is a farming community and residents have for years been attending to nature’s call in the bush and open places.
According to Collins Nsiah, the community could be affected by cholera if the lack of toilet situation is not solved to improve on sanitation, especially when the rains are about to set in.
He said the faecal matter would be washed into the creeks that serve as the source of drinking water and for domestic use and described the environmental situation, especially lack of toilets in the community, as a threat to their health.
The Assembly member disclosed that the District Assembly was yet to respond to an appeal to provide basic amenities, especially toilet facilities in the community.
He called for the intervention of the government, philanthropists and other stakeholders to help address the challenge by providing them with modern toilet facilities to improve upon sanitation in the area.
