The Minister for Justice and Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has threatened to release video evidence of the search conducted at the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, by National Security operatives.
His remark comes in response to claims by Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin that the operatives raided Dr. Addison’s home and stole GH¢10,000 that was left on his bed, as well as jewelry belonging to his wife.
Addressing a press conference, Dr. Ayine described the allegations as “shameful,” insisting that the search was legally sanctioned.
“The search was conducted with a warrant issued by the court; therefore, it cannot be said that it was a raid,” he stated.
He further recalled a personal experience from 2017 when he was searched by armed operatives after offering a legal opinion on the Ameri Deal.
The A-G said he didn’t make any fuss about it, questioning whether members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) believe they are above the law.
“Are some people now above the law, such that we cannot conduct legally and constitutionally sanctioned searches in their homes? We are all subject to the constitution,” Dr. Ayine emphasis0ed.
The Justice Minister also cautioned Mr. Afenyo-Markin against using his parliamentary immunity to defame public officers, urging responsible discourse on such matters.
Meanwhile, the Minority Leader has yet to respond to Dr. Ayine’s comments or the threat to release video evidence of the search.
