A Circuit Court in Dansoman has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of 67-year-old travel and tour agent, Abdallah Tijani, who is alleged to have defrauded a food vendor of $16,000 under false pretences.
Tijani, accused of taking money from Hajia Fati Yussif, a food vendor from Alhaji-Tabora, a suburb of Accra, under the pretence of securing travel arrangements for her two sons to the United States of America, has failed to appear in court since the case was first heard on February 5, 2025.
Despite several court dates, including February 5, 17, March 3, 20 and 24, Tijani has persistently refused to honour the court’s summons.
Consequently, the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, successfully applied for a bench warrant to secure his arrest.
Allegations and Background
According to court documents, Hajia Fati Yussif was introduced to Tijani by an acquaintance, Hajia Ayi, in May 2023.
The accused allegedly assured her that he could facilitate the travel process, claiming he had an existing package for two individuals who were set to depart for the U.S. in a few days.
He reportedly charged Hajia Fati $16,000 for the process, convincing her that her sons would be included in the travel arrangements. Believing the claim, she made the full payment at Tijani’s office in Nima, Accra.
However, after receiving the money, Tijani allegedly failed to fulfill his promise, offering repeated excuses instead. When Hajia Fati demanded a refund, he refused to return the funds.
Frustrated by the delay, she lodged a complaint with the police on January 13, 2025. Tijani was eventually tracked and arrested in his hideout on January 27, 2025. During interrogation, he reportedly admitted to the offense in his caution statement.
Legal Proceedings
Tijani is charged before the court, presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit.The bench warrant remains in force until the accused is arrested and brought before the court to face trial.
