Seventy motor cycles were yesterday impounded by the Police for various road offences in the Accra metropolis.
Additionally, the riders were arrested and are being processed for court for offences such as jumping red lights, riding without licence and proper documentation, riding without crash helmet and on the shoulders of the roads posing danger to others.
The exercise conducted by the Red Team Special taskforce of the Central Motor Traffic and Transport Unit(C/MTTU) is to ensure that riders adhered to the road safety regulations.
It was conducted in areas such as TUC, Accra City Hotel, ECG and Old Parliament House.
The Commanding Officer of the C/MTTU Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anderson Fosu-Ackaah, disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times in Accra said negative activities by some of the riders’ posed danger, to other users stating that his outfit would ensure that riders abide by the road traffic regulation.
“Most of the riders have been abusing the road traffic regulations posing danger to other road users,” he added
He said the Unit would partner with stakeholders to help improve sanity on the roads.
The Commanding Officer said the exercise way carried out in last month of this year where 50 riders were arrested and prosecuted in for court and a total fine of GH¢18,450 paid into the consolidated fund.
He said the exercise was ongoing, urging the public to partner the police to ensure that precious lives were protected.
ACP Fosu-Ackaah urged drivers to ensure that lives and properties were saved by abiding by the road regulations.
He urged other road users such as pedestrians to ensure that safety at all times by using designated routes when crossing the roads.
