Convict remanded on new robbery charge

A 21-year old convict who is already serving 10 years in jail at the Kumasi Central Prisons, has appeared before a circuit court here, on a new robbery charge.

Mohammed Nartey also known as Kwame Augustine was remanded into prison custody after he pleaded not guilty to robbery on Tuesday, and would appear again before the court on September 20, 2018.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Mary Nsenkyire, heard that, Nartey, unemployed, was serving his 10 years’ sentence in prison for a similar offence of which the trial ended some months ago.

Prosecutor, Police Inspector Hannah Acheampong told the court that Nartey, with the help of his two other accomplices, one Festival and Khalifah who are at large, on March 6, 2017 attacked and robbed a woman and her boyfriend of their possessions at knifepoint  at Abrepo in Kumasi.

According to the prosecutor the complainant, Rita Appiah Louis, who is a teacher together with her boyfriend, Nana Poku, on that fateful day at about 5am, were walking from Bantama to Nana Poku’s house at Abrepo.

Upon reaching Kookooase Roman Catholic Primary School, Nartey and his accomplices armed with knives attacked Louis and Nana Poku ordering them to surrender all their belongings.

In the process, Nartey snatched Louis’ Samsung Galaxy Note1 mobile phone and ordered her to remove the SIM and memory cards from it, while Festival also forcibly took off the wristwatches of the victims and bolted.

Louis reported the case to the Suame Police Station the following day and to her surprise, she saw Nartey in police custody and identified him as one of their attackers.

Nartey in his police caution statement confessed that, the phone which was found on him after his arrest by the police belonged to Louis which was used as evidence against him.

He was, then, arraigned for prosecution after the Attorney General advised the prosecution to charge him with the offence.
