Nii Okwei Nortey,Osu Stool Secretary
The police have been urged to ensure fairness in their dealings with the public in order to engender confidence and trust of the people in the service.
The call comes on the heels of alleged brutalities meted out to Nii Nortey Owuo III of Osu and some members of his entourage during the just ended Homowo celebrations at Osu.
Nii Owuo was said to be on his way from Osu Ashante Blohum to Kinkawe after he had finished performing the sprinkling of the traditional food kpokpoi when without any provocation he and his procession were stopped by the police.
Addressing a news conference here yesterday, the Stool Secretary for Osu, Nii Okwei Nortey said even though the police had a responsibility to protect lives and properties, it must not be seen to be partial in its quest to undertake this responsibility.
According to him, the Nii Nortey faction of the Osu chieftaincy was sad and disappointed in the Osu Divisional Police Command for its inability to provide security for its members during the celebrations a situation that could have degenerated if their supporters had not been restrained.
He explained that Nii Owuo III wrote earlier to inform and request for security from the Osu Divisional and Regional Police Command for protection during the sprinkling of kpokpoi as he had always done during the celebration but was shocked to hear from the Commander that his outfit had not been informed about the arrangements.
Nii Nortey since the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) announced to both sides that the Osu Klottey Gbatsunaa and the entire castle area had been declared a security zone, their side decided to heed to that decision by not going to the place.
“But the Kinka Dowunona and his group violated the said injunction on four separate occasions. Nii Okwei Kinka Dowuna VI was allowed a Ghana Police Patrol Riders of about ten, to lead his entourage, which we consider unfortunate,” he added.
He said beyond providing patrol riders for their rival faction’s entourage, Nii Dowuna and his men broke into the main castle gate, struggled with the military men on duty and forced their way into the “Gbatsunaa” a place that had been declared as a restricted area.
Despite this, the Police Service according to him decided to create confusion and use the opportunity to harm Nii Nortey Owuo and possibly all vocal critics of Nii Dowuna, stressing that “The police is complicit in causing harm to a number of our people, broken the big-toe of one young lady, head-wounds on three young men and deep lacerations on the faces of two young men, all to teach us a lesson.”
Nii Nortey accused the police of sowing a seed of discord in Osu and this discord if not handled properly could degenerate, adding that “The divisional police was keen on doing the will of Kinka Dowuona for donating motor bikes and other equipment to the service. Kinka is their hero and it makes no difference whether he has ever been enstooled customarily and traditionally as a chief or not.
