The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Birim South District Assembly (BSDA) in the Eastern Region have begun a sister-city relationship to further the development of their jurisdictions.
A cooperative agreement for the partnership, which would see the two assemblies exchange ideas on how to surmount their challenges and leverage opportunities, was signed in Accra on Monday.
The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for AMA, Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah and District Chief Executive (DCE) for BSMA, Richmond Amponsah, signed the agreement for their respective institutions.
Mr Sowah noted that, the development of the country was an enormous task which would require local partnerships like theirs to achieve.
He said though the two assemblies were in separate regions, their responsibilities were similar, while they faced similar challenges like sanitation of which they could jointly fight.
He said the collaboration would enable them share thoughts on the successful implementation of government’s flagship programmes like one district one factory.
He stressed the need for both assemblies to abide by the agreements for mutual development.
Mr Amponsah said he believed in domestication, and that although foreign partnerships were good, it was time for more districts to team up for development.
He said his assembly was committed to the partnership which would help the country on its quest to be “beyond aid”.
