The Upper East Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service(GNFS) , Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) , Ms. Heroine Boakye, has admonished all Ghanaians who build their houses with heavy bugler proofs and metals to be mindful of disasters such as fire outbreaks.
The Regional Commander gave the advice in Bolgatanga when the GNFS embarked upon an outrage educational programme at the Assembly’ s of God Church Redemption Centre in Bolgatanga on Sunday, to sensitize the congregation to desist from engaging certain activities that have the tendency of causing fire outbreak.
She stated although it was good to protect ones house from being attacked by thieves, it was also very important for Ghanaians to consider their lives in relation to emergencies like fire disasters.
“Some of the houses are built and fixed with heavy burglar proofs and metals in such a way that when there is any fire outbreak it will be very difficult if not impossible for one to escape. There is therefore the urgent need for all of us to take this lesson very important and make amends to avoid any catastrophe,” she stressed.
The Assistant Divisional Officer I, Musah Mohammed who is the officer in charge of the Municipal Education Unit and Mr. Michael Abugri , Sub Officer, both sensitized the congregation to replace their gas cylinder or regulator anytime they detected that they were licking, put the gas cylinder outside the house and fence it, get lighter before putting on the gas to light and place the cylinder 10 metres away from the burner.
The congregation was also educated on how to use the Fire Extinguisher and advice them place them at vantage points in their houses where they could have easy access to them anytime there was a disaster and not place them inside their rooms.
The Head Pastor of the Church, Reverend Dr. Lazarus Akabore, thanked the Regional Commander of the GNFS who is a member of the Church and urged her to ensure that they extended the sensitization programmes to all Churches and institutions in the region and the country as a whole.
He also entreated the congregation to put into practice the knowledge acquired from the sensitization programme to help curb fire outbreaks at their homes and work places.
