Kenya’s Agnes Ngetich became the first woman to run 10km in under 29 minutes as she won the Valencia Ibercaja road race in Spain.
The 22-year-old triumphed in 28 minutes 46 seconds, beating Ethiopian,YalemzerfYehualaw’s, 2022 road world record by 28 seconds.
Compatriot,EmmaculateAnyango, also ran under 29 minutes, finishing second in 28:57.
“I’m so happy. I didn’t expect this world record,” Ngetich said.
“I was coming to improve my time, at least somewhere around 29:14, but I am happy that I ran a world record.”
Ngetichequalled Beatrice Chebet’s5km world record of 14:13 in a women’s-only race, which she set two weeks ago.
Ngetich’s 10km time bettered the women’s 10,000m track world record of 29:01.03 held by Ethiopia’s LetesenbetGidey.
