The Gender-Based Violence Court has sentenced a 23-year-old carpenter to 10 years imprisonment for having sex with 13- year-old girl, at Ashalaja in the Greater Accra Region.
Christopher Kavi, charged with defilement, pleaded guilty, and was convicted on his plea and sentenced by the court.
Prosecuting, Detective Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei said the complainant was a trader and mother of the girl.
The prosecution said Kavi, the complainant and the victim resided in the same vicinity at Ashalaja, and that accused was a friend of the complainant.
Chief Insp Aniagyei said when the church service was about to end, Kavi and victim left to the house of accused.
Prosecution told the court that accused had sex with the victim, and later escorted her to her house.
Chief Insp Aniagyei said the complainant and other family members who were searching for the girl, met Kavi and the victim on their way home.
The court heard that Kavi was apprehended by the complainant and family members and taken to the police at Danchira.
Chief Insp Aniagyei said the Danchira police also handed over the case to the Weija Divisional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) and a medical report was issued to the complainant to seek medical care for the victim.
The court heard that after the medical report was endorsed by a medical doctor and investigations, Kavi was charged. – GNA
