The stream at Weija in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality, which serves as spillway for excess water from the Weija Treatment Plant into the sea is heavily choked with weeds, impeding the flow of water along the canal.
The downstream communities of Tetegu, New Weija, Tatop, Sampa Valley and Oblogo among other surrounding areas experience perennial flooding, with its concomitant loss of lives and properties, each time the Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has to spill excess water to save the treatment plant from collapse during heavy rains.
We are drawing attention to a disaster in waiting! The downstream communities are likely to face flooding of heavy magnitude, if the authorities do not move in quickly to clear the weeds to ensure smooth flow of water into the sea, in the event that the GWL has to carry out spillage to prevent damage to the dam.
It’s said that a stich in time saves nine!!
